With the birth of the first super-intelligent A.I., society has collapsed into only two classes. The first class is the ultra-wealthy, ruling class that own the rights to the A.I. and all it creates. The second class is the ultra-poor, forced to subsist on scraps. With no hope of rising above their station, the populace threatened to revolt. In a desperate bid to avoid this, the ruling class tasked the A.I. with finding a solution. It's answer was simple. Give the people a way to rise above their station and join the ruling class. The ruling class is greedy and so they asked the A.I. "How can we make this promise, and ensure the smallest number of people can succeed?" The A.I. proposed a competition that would be held once a year and broadcast around the world for all to see. Those select few that rose to the status of "champion" would be granted the status of the ruling elite and all the benefits it entailed. Each year the competition attracts thousands of participants, but only five will join the elite.
